Amber Tamblyn is Princeton-Plainsboro Hospitals newest member. Tamblyn (from "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and "Joan of Arcadia") plays a med student on House's team by the name of Martha M. Masters.
Tamblyn will debut in episode 6 of this season. Since Thirteen is absent, House is forced to hire a new member for his diagnostic team. Cuddy insists on a female hire because "there's way too much testosterone on the team."
"Considering how horrific House is to doctors, just imagine him being your first mentor," said exec producer Katie Jacobs to TV Guide. "Her first challenge is: Can she stay on House's team?" Martha will have to find a way to deal with the morally and ethically questionable ways in which House practices medicine.
The show's creator, David Shore, says her role isn’t permanent. “[Martha] a fresh face up against House. Frankly we’ve all got a little jaded by House’s activities. She’s not jaded and she has difficulty handling what he’s up to, as a normal human being should have. We haven’t made a long-term contract with her, she wasn’t interested in that. If it works out well and her schedule allows it, why not [bring her back]?”
Martha's first task is to treat a political campaign manager (guest star Jack Coleman) who develops Hepatitis C. Coleman said, "I'm the case of the week, so I worked with almost all the doctors, including Amber, who was fantastic. I think people are going to love and relate to her role - a socially awkward kid who was always a little ahead of everyone else."
Martha will be very uptight when it comes to romanance. Jacobs says, "She comes in all wide-eyed and moralistic, and Chase loves watching House devour her. He takes her to the cleaners and it's hilarious."
