One amazing thing about the casting process for House, MD, is that they could not find someone that they liked to play Gregory House! When Hugh Laurie finally came to audition for the part, the casting staff had been completely dissatisfied with all of the other auditions.
Hugh Laurie had just walked off the filming of Flight of the Phoenix, and so was not "dressed up" for the interview. However, he had such an absolutely perfect American accent that Bryan Singer thought he was a real American actor, not an English one. Hugh Laurie thought he was auditioning for a part that would be the sidekick of Dr. Wilson, who seemed to be the main character from what Hugh Laurie had seen He did not realize until getting the full teleplay for the pilot that he was the main character.
Hugh Laurie is reported to have said that he felt bad for getting paid more money to fake being a doctor than his father earned for actually being a doctor.
