James Hugh Calum Laurie plays Dr. Gregory House. He is an English actor, writer, comedian and musician. He first became known as an actor on Blackadder, and later as part of a comedy show with Stephen Fry. Beginning in 2004 he has played Dr. House.
Hugh Laurie was born on June 11, 1959 in Oxford, England and is the youngest of four children. When he was 29 years old, he lost his mother to motor neuron disease. His father, W. G. R. M. “Ran” Laurie, was a doctor who won an Olympic Gold Medal for Coxless Pairs at the 1948 London Games. Hugh Laurie went to many prestigious schools and won several competitions as an oarsman. He has received a Golden Globe in both 2006 and 2007 for his portrayal of Gregory House, and a Screen Actors Guild award in 2007 for Gregory House as well. He is paid $350,000 per episode, a great increase over his pay in various bit parts and comedy skits. He has three children: two sons, Bill and Charlie, and a daughter, Rebecca.
Dr. Gregory House is the primary focus of the TV Series House MD and is the head of the Department of Diagnostic Medicine. His specialties include infectious diseases and nephrology. He is frequently teased because he seems to think Lupus is the answer to many problems. He walks with a limp and has a vicodin addiction. In season 6 he kicked his addiction to vicodin and learned a way to stop his pain.
